WHY HAND ENGRAVING ?

Hand Engraving is a traditional craft and skill dating back to the middle ages, that involves a considerable measure of skill, knowledge, and training.

It involves an in-depth knowledge of different precious metals, impeccable attention to detail, artistic skill and patience, ensuring each piece is completely unique.

Our engravers have many years of experience working at the heart of Hatton Garden, the London jewellery district, and are experts in their field.

Your engraving will be 100% handcrafted with the tiniest, most intricate of details.

From the first cut to the final polish, your fingerprint engraving will not be ‘machined’ in any way.

RING PROFILE - FLAT COURT SHAPE

Flat court-shaped bands are a contemporary choice with a beautifully simple surface on which to display each fingerprint.

Our flat profile bands also have a slightly domed inner surface to ensure a more comfortable fit.

* * 9ct and 18ct rose gold rings are only available in standard flat profiles, not flat court, so the inner surface of the ring is not curved.

They are designed to be comfortable to wear every day for the rest of your life.

We alternatively offer court-shaped rings if you prefer.  These rings have a traditional rounded or domed shape, with a very slightly curved inner surface.

Product Information

Our fingerprint rings are made to accommodate real, unique fingerprints of different shapes and sizes.

Fingerprint quality between different people varies hugely depending on many factors, including age, health and hereditary factors.

All of these things will alter the look of the fingerprint ring you receive.

Fingerprints of young children are not defined enough for the pattern to be clearly seen in ink.

In elderly people and where there has been a lot of wear and tear on the hands, fingerprint ridges can become less prominent.

This can make the prints look less detailed.

Many adults also have wrinkles and scars over their finger tips which can appear as missing sections in the ink print, but they are still  very much part of your individual fingerprint.

If we do not feel that the fingerprint submitted is suitable, we will inform you immediately.

When we laser engrave detailed images such as fingerprints onto rings or pendants, very fine lines, or 'hairlines,' may sometimes appear.

This is completely normal and a natural part of the laser engraving process - rest assured, it is not a flaw!

We have access to some of the very best laser engraving machines available to the jewellery trade and this is common to the process.

When we work with images over 10mm long, the engraving software engraves them in sections, especially on curved surfaces like rings.

As a result, microscopic hairlines may appear where each section meets.

However, these are usually only visible under very close inspection and are rarely noticeable.

These hairlines are more likely to show up in highly detailed, compact and delicate fingerprints that have a lot of lines. Particularly those with fine lines that are positioned close together.

We typically see it more frequently in smaller women’s fingerprints.

We may also see it in very complex images simply due to the intricate nature of the design.

On the other hand, simpler designs, like larger men’s fingerprints with fewer, wider lines, generally have no visible hairlines after finishing.

Please note that as they are quite miniscule, they will not disrupt your fingerprint and as your ring is worn, they tend to blend in, gradually becoming virtually invisible to the naked eye.

The only way to completely avoid the appearance of these fine lines is to have your ring hand-engraved.

Our highly skilled engravers are able to engrave any of the styles shown on the standard engravers style card.

You can also provide us with an alternative font or even something written in your own handwriting, like a handwritten message, or a signature.

If you have an idea for a font but don't know where to start just let us know!
We are able to source thousands of different fonts from calligraphy to script to decorative styles.

Your font style will be confirmed in writing after you have placed your order, as may people choose to use a non-standard font.

You don't even have to make the decision straight away! Letter engraving is one of the last stages in creating a ring, so it will be a few weeks until you really need to choose.

We will always guide you in what is suitable.

We are confident that our engravers are able to engrave most styles of writing onto our wedding rings.

Our Engraving Fonts and Styles

For those customers interested in having samples of handwriting engraved, our engravers are able to engrave almost any style of handwriting onto your ring.

Their specialist knowledge and attention to detail are second to none.

Some examples of handwriting that we have engraved, include signatures; personal messages; writing from the inside of old birthday cards; writing from children’s drawings and writing from the backs of old photographs.

Writing can be from a child or adult, but it is important that it is legible.

The handwriting sample you send will be replicated on your ring.

We are unfortunately unable to improve your handwriting!

There is no need to send us original, sentimental writing samples.

If you have a scanner, you can scan and email us a copy of the handwriting, or, you can send us a good photocopy.

Ladies fingerprint wedding rings are usually available in sizes J to Q 1/2.

Mens fingerprint wedding rings are usually available in sizes R to Z 1/2.

If your ring size falls outside this range, please contact us and we will see what we can do to help you.

Rings are typically available as 4mm ladies rings or as 6mm Men's rings, as we feel this provides a good width to perfectly display each fingerprint.

We typically use medium weight rings as standard, which have an approximate depth of 1.8mm.

We find these to be very comfortable and are the perfect depth for diamond setting, although light and heavy weight bands can also be purchased on request.

Fingerprint rings are typically set with two diamonds, with one on each side of your fingerprint to frame it, or with a single diamond after a name or message.

You can also choose to have your jewellery set with a beautiful selection of precious birthstones or coloured gemstones.

The exact position of the diamonds and birthstones can be confirmed in writing after you have placed your order, so you do not have to decide straight away.

As a company, we are committed to obtaining our diamonds and gemstones from ethical and environmentally responsible sources.

The Process

1.  Once you have placed your order, we will contact you to make sure we have all the correct personal information.

2.  A gift wrapped fingerprinting ring kit and a ring sizing kit will then be posted out to you straight away.  We will arrange a suitable delivery date with you.

It will be delivered via Royal Mail Special Delivery.  This is a tracked and insured service and your ring kit will arrive before 1pm on a specified day.

3. Full instructions for taking the perfect ink fingerprint will be enclosed.

4. Although you can give us your approximate ring size when you order, we always send out a set of our own sample rings to 100% confirm your finger size before your actual ring is made.

We recommend that you keep the ring sizing for one week.

Once you are completely happy that you have the correct ring size, you should complete your order form and return it together with the ring sizing kit and your fingerprints.

We cannot proceed with your ring order before you return the sizing kit.

If you have a scanner, you can scan and email us the prints, or, you can send us a good photocopy so that you can keep your original prints.

5. Once you are happy with your ring size, we then make a blank ring.  This is an actual ring in your chosen size that is not yet engraved.

We send this to you for one final fitting to ensure that your ring is perfect before any engraving or stone setting takes place.

6. Once you have returned the ‘blank’ ring to us, we will engrave your fingerprint and any requested names, dates, special words or characters. We will set any diamonds or gemstones and hand polish it.

7. All fingerprint rings are now sent to the UK Assay Office to be hallmarked.

Every care is taken to ensure that your ring is a perfect fit before any engraving takes place.

Prior to engraving, all personalized fingerprint rings can be re-sized.

It is very important to note that once engraved, it is not always possible to re-size a ring, so it is crucial that you are happy with the fit.

Re-sizing a ring often involves cutting the ring and this would spoil the engravings.

Once your ring has been engraved and completed, if you have an issue with sizing, we will try our best to rectify this,  but it may not be possible and there will be an additional re-sizing cost.

Please see our  Fingerprint Ring Facts page for further information.

All custom personalised fingerprint rings take 8 weeks to create  once your impressions have been received, not from the order date.

Your ring will be carefully measured, engraved, stone set, polished and hallmarked by the relevant expert.

It is a lengthy process and it is not possible for us to “speed it up” or to provide an express service.

We believe that every fingerprint ring we make is worth the wait.

We aim to have all rings complete within 8 weeks, unless something completely unexpected occurs.

All prices shown on the Sophia Alexander website include free, fully insured postage  within the UK.

We use the Royal Mail Special Delivery™ Next Day service, so your fingerprint ring will be delivered to you by 1pm on an agreed date.

The package will be tracked and it will require a signature on arrival.

For international orders, please   contact the Sophia Alexander customer care team on 01440510050.

Overseas shipping is priced for each individual order and varies.

It can be as much as £100 to ship jewellery insured from the UK, depending where on the world you are, so please get in touch.

At Sophia Alexander, we firmly believe that your beautiful personalised fingerprint rings deserve to be perfectly packaged.

Every fingerprint ring will arrive presented in a elegant, branded white leatherette gift box, with a black velvet interior and a white swing bag.

We carefully tie every box with a beautifully designed Sophia Alexander white and silver chiffon ribbon and enclose a complimentary gift card in each bag, which we can personalise for you, or leave blank for you to add a message yourself.

We finish every package with a handmade wax seal.

For those clients who wish to see their fingerprint rings before they give it to the recipient, we can send the finished rings with the ribbons untied and the wax seal supplied separately, so that the piece can be seen before adding these yourself.

Please let us know how you would like your rings to arrive.

All custom fingerprint rings are bespoke and personalised for each individual client.

We provide you with approximate product colours, dimensions and weights. However, variations in size and the surface appearance of the precious metals chosen may occur, and should be expected.

We provide images and figures as guidance only.

Photographs of fingerprint rings may not be displayed at their actual size.  Different computer monitors may alter the perceived sizes of products and colours of the precious metals.

Rings are made to accommodate fingerprints of different shapes and sizes.

Prints taken may vary in quality and clarity. This can simply be due to age, health, condition or hereditary factors.

The best part of the print you submit will be exactly replicated in precious metal.

You should always be able to see a clearly defined print.

If you are not completely happy with your prints, return them to us & we will let you know whether they are suitable.

If we do not feel that the prints submitted are suitable, we will inform you immediately.

Names, words and messages are sized according to different fonts and lengths.

Gemstones, diamonds, semi-precious stones and pearls may also vary in colour, size and shape.

These things will all alter the look of your completed ring.

This all means that the fingerprint rings you purchase will inevitably vary slightly from the photographed images seen on our website, www.sophia-alexander.com, on social media pages and in other locations.
